Jammeh’s defeat in the 2016 presidential election ushered in a new government and a new dispensation that commits to restore the rule of law, respect and protect basic freedoms and initiate reforms to consolidate The Gambia’s new found democracy. Despite growing citizens’ interests in public affairs, The Gambia is confronted with weak state institutions and civil society organizations. Our work under this thematic area is to protect and enlarge the space for civic engagement and accountable and transparent governance. Thus, the Democratic Governance Program seeks to support The Gambia’s transition to democracy by contributing to the quality of elections and political parties, enhance citizens’ engagement in national political processes and local governance and public service delivery. Our work specifically focuses on:

  • Political parties and electoral integrity
  • Decentralization and Local Governance
  • Legislative engagement
  • Media Transitional justice and Civil Society,
  • Trade Unions and Community Based Organization (CBO)
  • capacity building
